My orchid bloomed just when I received a call telling me I was in Ruth McDowell's "Designing From Nature" course. I photographed the orchid and it became the focus of my project. I will never forget my first attempt at growing an orchid or Ruth's class. I loved both.

Inspired by a neighbor's maple tree which provides seasonal entertainment to the windows of our third floor bedroom. Center leaves are hand pieced and quilted. Borders and sashing are machine pieced and quilted. Thanks to Nancy Howard and the Second Tuesday Quilters for advice and encouragement.

Wanted to try a simple paper piecing while doing a basket quilt. Fun was in using a variety of flowers and basket fabrics, including using both sides of two fabrics. Luck was in finding perfect backing after the top was finished.

Created in 2004 for my elderly mother, a gifted seamstress who taught me to sew. The quilt was returned to me upon her death, at 90, in June. Each center picture is specific to her life history. I hoped they would occupy her mind, and that the feel of the cloth would be a tactile comfort.
