I simplified the "Rail Fence" pattern so I could concentrate on mixing fabric patterns. I knew I wanted the "Catkin" blocks in there, and things fell into place after that. Thanks to Nancy Howard, my co-worker at Fabric Corner, and Linda Merwin, my former co-worker at FC, for helpful input.

The Purple Quilt

The Purple Quilt, by Erica Cavin
Pattern Name: Curvaceous Squares.
Large Quilt 75 x 93
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted

Started in a wonderful class with Dianne Hire. Initially I had a different plan in mind but when I laid out the first blocks they seemed to want to be arranged in the current pattern. This meant I had to do much fabric shopping to find just the right purples to complete the pattern; what a burden!

Boston Harbor Lights

Boston Harbor Lights, by Sue Colozzi

Wall Quilt 29 x 20
Machine Appliquéd, Machine Quilted, Hand Embroidered, Fused

After finding the "perfect" fabric to represent water at night, I decided on using it to create this view of Boston as seen from East Boston. The illusion of reflections in the water is created with rayon thread and chiffon layers. The darkly colored old pilings in the foreground provide a nice contrast to the brightly lit buildings behind.

Swan Boat in Spring

Swan Boat in Spring, by Sue Colozzi
Second Prize, Wall Quilts.

Wall Quilt 28.25 x 26
Machine Appliquéd, Machine Quilted, Fused, Some hand sewing and beading

The Boston Public Garden is one of my favorite places to visit. I love trying to find fabrics that through color, texture, and transparency convey a sense of reality. The two types of lace I used closely resembled the flowers in the trees, and the chiffons helped to diffuse the colors in the reflections.
