QNM, March 2004 presented a paper pieced version of a 1930 airplane block published in the 1930 QNM issue 256. I took the pattern back to appliqué. Made with love for my oldest grandson for his 11th birthday.

In this series of 4 mini quilts, I explored the shape of the wonderfully intense Australian wildflower, the Sturt Desert Pea. I am interested in the graphic nature of the shape and focused on simplifying the shape, colour saturation and balance of elements to interpret the flower while using the parameters of our challenge.

This almost twin size comforter benefit quilt was made with donated fabric from the RSQ Guild. I decided to call it Autumn Cabins because of the pattern and the fall color scheme. Also the strips of color reminded me of the aisles in a field during harvest season, which occurs in autumn.

I created this series as a meditation on the intense emotional path of grief towards renewed hope. Each small quilt represents a stage of Grief (according to the Kubler-Ross model): Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Despair and Acceptance. Inspired from personal photos, or a composite from several photos of nature scenes (the angel, source unknown) and a related poem.

As a novice quilter I enjoyed the challenge of learning paper piecing for the curves and points in this New York Beauty pattern. My instructor, Missy Shay, encouraged me to do the free motion quilting with colorful thread to enhance the playful plaid fabrics.
