Rising Star
Challenge, by Dorothee Kennedy
Challenge Quilt 42 x 42
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted
Based on a pattern seen in "Quick Quilts From Your Scrap Bag", 1999 Oxmoor House, Inc.
Black & Blue, by
Delores McCravy
Challenge Quilt 30 x
30
Hand Appliqued, Hand Quilted
The design of this quilt was done by drawing random shapes, using a flexi curve, on paper which was then transferred to a foundation. Fabric was cut using the paper pattern pieces and placed on the foundation. Bias binding was then applied over the abutting edges. Method seen on "Simply Quilts".
We'll Always Have
Casablanca, by Carolyn McShane
Challenge Quilt 32 x 44
Machine Pieced, Hand Appliqued,
Hand Quilted
To my husband and memories of unexpectedly landing in Casablanca en route to Paris, with no "letters of transit". Inspiration was Eiffel Tower fabric and the male and female figures transforming just happened. Bottom center note, reverse applique "Love Grows" from Dutch Treat by Judy Gorden.
One in Every Crowd, by
Elaine O'Neill
Pattern Name: Appliqued
Hearts.
Challenge Quilt 13 x 16
Machine Pieced, Machine
Appliqued, Machine Quilted
This challenge offered me the chance to use my new sewing machine in new ways -- and it was fun! Plus the fabrics are 'funky.'
I painted the walls red,
by Rose Marie Pascale
Original design.
Challenge Quilt 38 x 38
Hand Pieced, Machine Quilted Quilted by
Quilted Finishes
inspired by the drips and drops on the floor after painting the walls red.
Aztec
Sound, by Helen Pride
Challenge Quilt 28 x 28
Machine Pieced, Hand Appliqued, Hand
Quilted
I collected fabrics with music motifs for a number of months in order to make a quilt for my son Rob's new music studio, "Aztec Sound," that is located in his new home. It was originally going to be a one-block wall hanging, but the quilt grew as I went along.
Patchwork, Scale and
Line, by Melissa Radzyminski
Pattern Name: Odd Fellows Chain.
Challenge Quilt 35 x 11
Machine Pieced
I love color, so making a quilt with only one was really hard. I decided to emphasize other aspects that make quilts interesting. Each of these blocks uses the same pattern.
Where's
Buddy?, by Penny Sander
1st Prize, Challenge Quilts.
Challenge Quilt 39.5 x 43.5
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted
I used fourteen patterned black-&-white fabrics, plus black, white, and green, to create this portrait of my cat. When viewed up close, over 2000 one-inch rectangles appear as an abstract composition. When viewed from a distance, Buddy's gazing portrait materializes. Leftover swatches form the back.
A Slice of Lime on the
Side, by Missy Shay
Pattern
Name: Radiant New York Beauty.
Challenge Quilt 28 x 26
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted
I had taught a Valerie Wells "Radiant New York Beauty" class at Cambridge Quilt and decided that it would be fun to try the pattern in 2 colors. I'm branching out by using less preferred colors like the lime in this quilt.
Homage to the Fertility
Goddess, by Stephanie Shore
Challenge Quilt 27.5 x 30.5
Machine Pieced, Machine Appliqued,
Machine Embroidered, Fused, Machine Quilted
Begun while a friend was undergoing fertility treatments. Corpus luteum (yellow body) is the name given to the developing follicle once the egg has been released. Given the extra color I chose, I liked the visual pun. Can you guess the outcome of the fertility treatments?

Little Blue, by Nancy Soyring
Pattern Name: Nine-patch.
Challenge Quilt 32 x 43
Machine
Pieced, Machine Quilted
Sometimes I get a little blue thinking that time is rushing by too fast. I was stuck on this challenge for months until at the last minute I tried the nine-patch quilt design from Gai Perry's Color from the Heart.
Black & White Blues, by
Barbara Stasiak
Challenge Quilt 34 x
28
Machine Pieced, Hand Quilted
The black and white palette with one accent color seemed intriguing.
Edward Hopper Revisited,
by Jean Stringham
Challenge Quilt 41 x
24
Machine Pieced, Hand Appliqued, Machine Appliqued, Machine
Quilted, Embellishments
Edward Hopper's painting of a street scene entitled "Early Sunday Morning" inspired the Tuesday Morning Bee to make this challenge quilt. From left to right, the vertical sections were made by Gail Willett, Jeanne Funk-Gedies, Kendra Dowd, Missy Shay, Billie Berents, Jean Stringham, Carol Brown and Janice Gould.
Folded
Star, by Peter Stringham
Challenge Quilt 40 x 40
Machine Pieced, hand tied
This small but very heavy quilt (3 pounds of fabric) ends up looking like folded napkins which open and close when the quilt lies on your lap. It uses no batting because the quilt often has 12 layers of fabric. The feel of the multiple knots on the back reminds me of soft needles on a cactus.
Shades of Gray, by
Bethany Viens
Challenge Quilt 20 x
22
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted
A challenge using black and white? For me, "black and white" immediately makes me think of The Monkees and the song "Shades of Gray". I mixed Karen Eckmeier's layered curves technique with one of my childhood favorities and had fun making my quilted version of the song.
